Welcome to Ain, a department of nature and gastronomy between Lyon and Geneva, in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. From Bourg-en-Bresse (Royal Monastery of Brou — masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic, Bresse poultry PDO) to Pérouges (medieval city classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, cobbled streets, sugar galette, Place du Tilleul), via the Dombes (1,200 ponds, Villars-les-Dombes Bird Park — 3,000 birds of 300 species), Divonne-les-Bains (spa resort, casino, views of Lake Geneva and Mont-Blanc), the Bugey (AOC vineyard, Ain gorges, Cerdon waterfalls, caves) and the Jura mountains (Haut-Jura regional nature park, forests, lakes), Ain combines medieval heritage, preserved nature and art of living. Treat yourselves to a romantic weekend in a love room with private jacuzzi in the most gourmet department of Rhône-Alpes. Neighboring departments: Rhône (69), Saône-et-Loire (71), Jura (39), Haute-Savoie (74), Savoie (73) and Isère (38).

Capital of Ain, Bourg-en-Bresse is famous for the Royal Monastery of Brou (masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic built by Margaret of Austria in the 16th century — church with three princely tombs sculpted with extraordinary finesse, cloister, museum), Bresse poultry PDO (the only poultry in the world to benefit from an appellation of origin — blue feet, white plumage, red comb, the colors of the French flag) and the city center (half-timbered houses, market, gastronomy). Treat yourselves to a room with private jacuzzi in Bourg-en-Bresse after a visit to Brou.
Perched on a hill overlooking the Ain plain, Pérouges is one of France's most beautiful medieval cities (One of France's Most Beautiful Villages): cobbled streets (rolled pebbles), Place du Tilleul (centuries-old plane tree, half-timbered houses, inns), ramparts, House of the Princes of Savoy, fortress-church. The Pérouges galette (sugar and butter tart, local specialty) can be enjoyed in the square. Many historical films have been shot here (The Three Musketeers, Mandrin). A timeless setting for a romantic weekend.
A thermal and climatic resort at the foot of the Jura, Divonne-les-Bains seduces with its thermal baths (beneficial waters, treatments, spa), its casino, its racetrack, its 18-hole golf course and its lake (view of Mont-Blanc and Lake Geneva). 15 minutes from Geneva, Divonne offers an elegant resort setting between France and Switzerland.
A unique landscape in France, the Dombes has over 1,200 ponds dug by monks in the Middle Ages: the Villars-les-Dombes Bird Park (over 3,000 birds of 300 species, aerial shows, immersive paths), Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne (flowered city, medieval market halls, apothecary), bike rides between the ponds, fishing and bird watching. A setting of tranquility and poetry.
The Bugey (southeast of Ain) offers a landscape of mountains and vineyards: Bugey AOC vineyard (white, red, sparkling — sparkling pink Cerdon, ancestral method), Ain gorges (turquoise waters, cliffs), Cerdon caves (Grand Site, Prehistory leisure park), Belley (birthplace of Brillat-Savarin — father of French gastronomy) and Ambérieu-en-Bugey (gateway to the Prealps). A preserved region combining gastronomy and nature.
The Royal Monastery of Brou (Bourg-en-Bresse) is a masterpiece of late flamboyant Gothic: built between 1506 and 1532 by Margaret of Austria to house the tombs of her husband Philibert the Fair and her mother-in-law. The three princely tombs (marble lace carved with incredible finesse), the rood screen, the stained glass windows and the choir stalls make it one of the most beautiful funerary ensembles of the Renaissance in Europe.
The Bird Park (35 ha in the heart of the Dombes) is the largest ornithological park in France: 3,000 birds of 300 species (flamingos, pelicans, cranes, raptors, toucans), free flight shows, immersive aviaries, Australian bush, tropical jungle. A poetic and exotic experience for couples.
The Retord plateau (1,000-1,200 m, between Bugey and Jura) and the Jura mountains (Haut-Jura regional nature park) offer fir forests, pastures, cross-country skiing in winter, hiking in summer, farm-inns and cheeses (Comté, Bleu de Gex PDO). A gentle and authentic mountain setting.
The Pays de Gex (foothills of the Jura facing Mont-Blanc and Lake Geneva) seduces with Ferney-Voltaire (Voltaire's castle — the philosopher's residence for 20 years, restored), its proximity to Geneva (15 min) and its panoramas of the Alps and Lake Geneva. A cosmopolitan and elegant setting.
