Welcome to Saône-et-Loire, a department of Romanesque heritage and vineyards in the heart of the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. From the Cluny Abbey (the largest church in Christendom before St. Peter's in Rome) to Autun (Romanesque cathedral, Gallo-Roman remains), from the vineyards of Mâconnais and Côte Chalonnaise (Pouilly-Fuissé, Mercurey, Givry) to Bresse Bourguignonne (Louhans, AOC poultry, arcades) and Charolais (bocages, AOC beef), Saône-et-Loire combines Romanesque art, gastronomy, and landscapes of bocage and vines. Treat yourself to a romantic weekend in a love room with a private jacuzzi in the heart of Southern Burgundy. Neighboring departments: Côte-d'Or (21), Jura (39), Ain (01), Rhône (69), Allier (03) and Nièvre (58).

Prefecture of Saône-et-Loire, Mâcon captivates with its Saône quays (promenade lined with terraces, Saint-Laurent bridge), the Ursulines Museum (fine arts and archeology, in a former convent), the Maison de Bois (sculpted Renaissance facade, one of Burgundy's oldest houses) and its position as the gateway to the Mâconnais vineyards (Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, Viré-Clessé). Treat yourself to a room with a private jacuzzi in Mâcon after a tasting in the Mâconnais cellars.
Founded by Augustus as "sister of Rome," Autun preserves exceptional Gallo-Roman remains (Saint-André gate, Arroux gate, Temple of Janus, ancient theater) and the Saint-Lazare Cathedral (masterpiece of Burgundian Romanesque art, Last Judgment tympanum sculpted by Gislebertus — one of the most beautiful in France, historiated capitals). The Rolin Museum (Gislebertus' reclining Eve, medieval art) completes this exceptional city of art and history.
Nicknamed the "eldest daughter of Cluny," Paray-le-Monial boasts the Sacré-Cœur Basilica (a reduced-scale replica of the Cluny abbey church, a masterpiece of Cluniac Romanesque art, a place of pilgrimage). The town also captivates with its faience (Hiéron Museum, unique sacred art collection) and the banks of the Bourbince.
Capital of the Bresse Bourguignonne, Louhans charms with its Grand Rue with arcades (157 arcades over 500 m, unique in France), its Monday market (the largest live poultry market in France, Bresse AOC poultry — the only AOC poultry in the world) and the Atelier d'un Journal (old printing press). A gourmet and authentic region.
Cluny (abbey — the largest church in Christendom for 500 years, national stud farm, panoramic Fromages tower, medieval granary), Tournus (Saint-Philibert Abbey — one of France's oldest Romanesque buildings, nave with unique transverse vaults, Saône riverbanks), Charolais (AOC Charolais beef, green bocages, Charolles — faience): three jewels of Romanesque heritage and Burgundian terroir.
Founded in 910, Cluny Abbey was the center of Western Christendom for centuries. The Cluny III abbey church (177 m long) was the largest church in the world before the reconstruction of St. Peter's in Rome. The remains, the granary (13th-century framework), the Fromages tower, and the Museum of Art and Archeology bear witness to this past grandeur.
A major prehistoric site (Solutrean hunters, 20,000 years ago) and symbol of Southern Burgundy, the Roche de Solutré offers a spectacular panorama of the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyards, the Mâconnais, and the Beaujolais mountains. Short hike (30 min) and Prehistory museum at the foot of the site.
The Mâconnais (Pouilly-Fuissé, Saint-Véran, Viré-Clessé — great white Burgundy wines) and the Côte Chalonnaise (Mercurey, Givry, Rully, Montagny) offer wines of character in a landscape of hills and wine-growing villages. Tastings at winemakers' and the wine route: a gourmet and romantic program.
The Voie Verte (former railway line converted, 120 km from Chalon-sur-Saône to Mâcon) crosses vineyards, Romanesque villages, and bocage landscapes. By bike or on foot, it is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in France — ideal for an active and gourmet couple.
