Welcome to Tarn-et-Garonne, a department of pink brick and confluences in the heart of the Occitanie region. From Montauban (pink city, Ingres-Bourdelle museum, Place Nationale) to Moissac Abbey (Romanesque cloister and sculpted tympanum, UNESCO listed — Way of St. James), from the Aveyron Gorges (limestone cliffs, perched villages of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and Bruniquel) to the bastides of Quercy Blanc (Lauzerte — Most Beautiful Village in France, Montpezat-de-Quercy, Caylus) and the confluence of the Tarn and Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne offers a gentle Occitan setting between rivers, hillsides and medieval heritage. Treat yourselves to a romantic weekend in a love room with a private jacuzzi in the most gourmet department of the Southwest. Neighboring departments: Haute-Garonne (31), Tarn (81), Aveyron (12), Lot (46), Lot-et-Garonne (47) and Gers (32).

Prefecture of Tarn-et-Garonne, Montauban is the second pink city in France after Toulouse: the Place Nationale (17th-century arcaded square in pink bricks, one of the most beautiful in France — double row of arcades), the Ingres-Bourdelle museum (in the former episcopal palace on the Tarn, the world's largest collection of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres who was born here + sculptures by Bourdelle who was also born here), the Pont Vieux (14th century, pink bricks on the Tarn — panorama) and the narrow streets of the old town (private mansions, Saint-Jacques church). Treat yourselves to a room with a private jacuzzi in Montauban after a sunset on the Pont Vieux.
A major stop on the Way of Saint-James of Compostela, Moissac is home to one of the most beautiful Romanesque art ensembles in the world: the cloister (76 sculpted capitals from the 11th-12th century, UNESCO listed — masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture), the tympanum of the south portal (Christ in Majesty, UNESCO listed) and the Saint-Pierre abbey church. The city is also the capital of Moissac chasselas (AOC, France's only AOC table grape — golden bunches, Chasselas festival in September). A setting of spirituality, art and gourmet delights.
The Aveyron Gorges offer a spectacular landscape of limestone cliffs, forests and perched villages: Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (12th-century Romanesque House — one of France's oldest town halls, market hall, market, canoeing), Bruniquel (two castles overlooking the gorges, village classified as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages, major prehistoric site — 176,000 years of human occupation) and Penne (vertiginous castle under restoration, medieval village). Canoeing, swimming and hiking: an exceptional natural setting.
Lauzerte (Most Beautiful Village in France, bastide perched on a spur, Place des Cornières with arcades, Way of St. James), Montpezat-de-Quercy (Saint-Martin collegiate church, Flemish tapestries), Caylus (medieval houses, market hall, Christ in carved wood by Zadkine) and Auvillar (Most Beautiful Village in France, unique circular market hall in France, port on the Garonne): a string of classified bastides and villages in the rolling landscape of Quercy Blanc.
The Moissac cloister (UNESCO listed) is one of the most beautiful Romanesque cloisters in the world: 76 exceptionally finely carved capitals (biblical scenes, plants, fantastic animals), marble columns alternating single and geminated, meditation galleries. The tympanum of the south portal (Christ in Majesty surrounded by symbols of the Evangelists) is a masterpiece of medieval sculpture.
Descending the Aveyron Gorges by canoe (from Saint-Antonin to Bruniquel, 2 to 4 hours) offers a unique view of the cliffs, perched villages and wild nature. Swimming in clear waters, picnicking on the banks and panoramic views of Bruniquel Castle: a romantic and active outdoor activity.
The Place Nationale of Montauban (17th century, rebuilt after two fires) is a jewel of pink brick architecture: double row of arcades, cafe and restaurant terraces, market (Wednesday and Saturday). The evening light on the pink bricks and arcades creates an Occitan dolce vita atmosphere.
Auvillar (Most Beautiful Village in France) seduces with its circular market hall (unique in France, Tuscan columns), its viewpoint over the Garonne and its port. The Canal des Deux-Mers (lateral canal to the Garonne, extension of the Canal du Midi) crosses the department: bike or walk rides along the locks and century-old plane trees.
