Welcome to the Vaucluse, a department of light and lavender in the heart of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. From majestic Avignon (UNESCO Papal Palace, Pont d'Avignon, Festival) to the hilltop villages of the Luberon (Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes, Bonnieux) and Mont Ventoux (Giant of Provence, 1,912 m), passing through L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (Venice Comtadine, antique dealers), Carpentras (truffle market, Jewish heritage) and the lavender fields (Sault, Sénanque Abbey), Vaucluse embodies postcard Provence. Treat yourselves to a romantic weekend in a love room with a private jacuzzi in the land of lavender and cicadas. Neighboring departments: Bouches-du-Rhône (13), Var (83), Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (04), Drôme (26), Gard (30) and Ardèche (07).

City of Popes, Avignon is a jewel of world heritage: the Palais des Papes (UNESCO-listed, largest Gothic palace in Europe — seat of the papacy in the 14th century, frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti), the Pont d'Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet, UNESCO-listed), the ramparts (3 km of intact enclosure), the Rocher des Doms (panoramic garden overlooking the Rhône and Mont Ventoux) and the Festival d'Avignon (largest theater festival in the world, July). The old town (Place de l'Horloge, narrow streets, private mansions) is full of restaurants and terraces. Treat yourselves to a room with a private jacuzzi in Avignon after a performance at the Festival.
Ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, Gordes is one of the most photographed villages in Provence: blonde stone houses clinging to the cliff, Renaissance castle (Vasarely), steep narrow streets and spectacular panoramic views of the Luberon. Sénanque Abbey (12th-century Cistercian, lavender field in front — iconic image of Provence) is 4 km away. The Village des Bories (dry stone huts, prehistoric habitat) completes the visit.
Perched on cliffs of ochre ranging from yellow to blood red, Roussillon (Most Beautiful Village in France) offers a unique chromatic spectacle in Europe: the Sentier des Ocres (walk through old quarries, cliffs sculpted by erosion), the Conservatoire des Ocres (history and techniques, workshops) and the village facades (painted in ochre tones). A village of light and color to explore as a couple.
The Luberon Regional Natural Park is the embodiment of dream Provence: hilltop villages (Gordes, Roussillon, Ménerbes — "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle, Bonnieux, Lacoste — Marquis de Sade's castle, Lourmarin), lavender fields (June-August), Provençal markets (candied fruits from Apt, melons from Cavaillon, truffles), vineyards (Luberon AOC, Ventoux AOC) and garrigue hills. An incomparable way of life and romantic setting.
Nicknamed "Comtadine Venice," L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue charms with its canals (the Sorgue river divides into multiple branches crossing the city, historic water wheels), its antique markets (the largest concentration of antique dealers in France after Paris, international fairs at Easter and in August), its Sunday Provençal market (one of the most beautiful in Provence) and its quays lined with galleries. An ideal aquatic and antique-hunting setting for a couple.
Capital of the Comtat Venaissin, Carpentras seduces with its truffle market (November to March, Friday morning — one of the most important in France), its berlingots (traditional striped confectionery), the synagogue (oldest in France still in operation, 15th century), the Saint-Siffrein Cathedral (Southern Gothic, Jewish gate), the Roman triumphal arch and the Carpentras canal. Gateway to Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
Mont Ventoux (1,912 m, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) dominates all of Provence: 360° panorama from the summit (from the Alps to the Mediterranean, from the Camargue to the Cévennes). A mythical route of the Tour de France, Ventoux also offers lavender fields (Sault plateau), vineyards (AOC Ventoux) and charming villages (Bédoin, Malaucène, Sault). Sunrise from the summit: one of the most grandiose spectacles in Provence.
The image of Sénanque Abbey surrounded by its lavender field (late June-early August) has become the emblem of Provence. The 12th-century Cistercian abbey (active monks, guided tours, lavender shop) offers a setting of absolute serenity in a secret valley near Gordes.
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is the most powerful spring in Europe (resurgence at the foot of a 230m cliff, intense emerald green waters). The village (paper mill, Pétrarque museum — the poet composed his sonnets to Laure there) and the stroll along the Sorgue create a romantic and mysterious setting.
The Dentelles de Montmirail (jagged limestone ridges, hiking, climbing) dominate the vineyards of Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise (Muscat AOC). Wine tastings at the wineries, stone villages (Séguret — Most Beautiful Village in France, Le Barroux — abbey and castle): an exceptional wine region in a Provençal mountain setting.
